In 1989 the ABRF organized the largest collaborative study on amino acid analysis to date. The major goal was to evaluate the relationship between the amount of sample hydrolyzed and/or analyzed and the following three parameters: accuracy and precision of different amino acid analysis methods; the hydrolysis conditions; and the ability to quantify cysteine. Two samples, ABRF-89AAA1 and ABRF-89AAA2, were sent to member facilities and 36 returned data by September 1989.
These preliminary results have been summarized in Current Research in Protein Chemistry, J. Villafranca (ed.), Academic Press, 1990. A preprint was mailed to all ABRF members in October 1989.
A comprehensive evaluation of the many variables in this large volume of data is currently underway, and a more extensive final report will be prepared by the 1989 subcommittee members: Donna Atherton, John Crabb, Lowell Ericsson, Rusty Kutny (chair) and Alan Smith.
