A new subcommittee is being organized to address peptide synthesis technology and mass spectral analysis in core facilities. Formation of this committee reflects the rapidly growing importance of mass spectrometry in protein structural determinations and the continuing importance of peptide synthesis. An increasing number of MS facilities are developing at least a partial core facility situation as sensitivity and mass range increase. Also, there have been several new developments in peptide synthesis which has been a long term resident of many core facilities. The relative merits of Fmoc and tBoc chemistries, cleavage related problems and product characterization are just a few issues that constantly face the peptide chemist.
Organization of this committee will be started this year so that it can be fully operational next year. Alan Smith has agreed to coordinate the organization of the committee and will serve as the temporary chair during the organizational phase. If you would like to volunteer for membership in this committee or have ideas for committee functions, please contact Alan Smith (address on page 1).
