ABRF-89SEQ, the 1989 sequence sample, was sent to approximately 120 facilities as an unknown. This sample was designed to reflect those contaminated "real world" samples that we see too frequently in core facilities. Two unrelated peptides were combined in a 5:1 molar ratio at a sufficiently high level to permit the assignment of most residues of the primary component. The first 50 responses, which were received by the beginning of September 1989, were summarized in a manuscript for inclusion in Current Research in Protein Chemistry, J J. Villafranca (ed.), Academic Press, 1990.
A total of 61 responses were received prior to the release of the actual sequences through circulation of the above preprint to all ABRF members in October 1989. The 1989 sequence subcommittee was comprised of Russell Blacher, Gregory Grant, Audree Fowler (ad hoc), Ronald Niece, David Speicher (chair), and Kenneth Williams.
