The membership roll of ABRF continues to grow; in fact there are more members now than ever. Part of the increase is from the successful mailings by the manufacturers which reached many facilities that were not aware of ABRF.
The recent election brought two new members to the Executive Committee and all subcommittees have new members to replace the retiring ones. We welcome them to the ABRF committee work and hope they enjoy making contributions.
Several more manuscripts resulting from research subcommittee activities have been submitted for publication. The amino acid analysis and the sequencing subcommittees will have papers published in Techniques in Protein Chemistry II, the publication resulting from the Fourth Symposium of the Protein Society. An analysis of the 1989 survey data has been submitted to the FASEB JOURNAL by the 1989/90 survey committee. In addition, two manuscripts are in press in Methods in Protein Sequence Analysis edited by H. Jornvall, J-.-0. Hoog and A.-M. Gustavsson, which will be released in early 1991.
The Fifth Satellite Meeting held in conjunction with the Symposium of the Protein Society was one of the best satellite meetings that ABRF has organized. New features included an invited speaker describing an up-and-coming technology for core facilities, three posters presented by ABRF subcommittees, and an open discussion for members to query and offer suggestions to the leaders of ABRF. The Satellite Meeting is described in detail on page 3.
The newsletter has been a major addition to ABRF activities. An editorial will be a regular feature beginning with this issue. We expect to have frequent guest editorials dealing with timely issues for resource facilities. Also, if you have a useful idea or a problem that other members should know about, submit it to the "Ideas and Methods Forum" or as a letter to the editor. Suggestions for other features are welcome--the newsletter's mission is to inform and promote communication.
Plans for 1991 include another round of unknowns from the amino acid analysis and sequencing subcommittees for your participation in establishing the status of operational capabilities in member facilities. Expect the samples earlier in 1991 for two reasons: the Protein Society meets two months earlier than usual and with the experience gained in three annual rounds of preparation of unknowns, we expect to be more efficient and timely. A survey is being prepared by the survey subcommittee for distribution in time to have preliminary results to present at the Satellite Meeting. ASBMB has invited ABRF to present a symposium at their annual meeting in Atlanta on Monday, April 15, 1991 (details inside). Elizabeth Fowler is organizing the Satellite Meeting to be held in conjunction with the Fifth Symposium of the Protein Society in Baltimore in June 1991. We look forward to an exciting year and anticipate that it will be even more productive than 1990. With your participation, it will be.
