AMINO ACID ANALYSIS SUBCOMMITTEE

The 1991 ABRF Amino Acid Analysis study was designed to evaluate the best and most complete analysis of a test protein. A relatively large amount of a single protein was provided to the members so that a number of analyses could be performed, including cysteine/cystine and tryptophan determinations. The sample was distributed in late February to members. New members who paid their dues after February 1 received the sample in April or May. As of early May, data had been received from 49 facilities. Several of these facilities analyzed the sample by more than one method, thus more than 50 data sets will be used in the final data analysis. Nearly 70% of the facilities analyzed the sample for cysteine/cystine, while just over 20% of the facilities analyzed the sample for tryptophan. As of mid-May, the members of the 1991 AAA subcommittee, Ray Paxton, Yu-Ching Pan, Dan Strydom, and George Tarr, were in the final stages of compiling and analyzing the data. The results of the study will be presented at the ABRF Satellite Meeting on June 22 immediately before the Protein Society Symposium in Baltimore, and will be submitted for publication in "Techniques in Protein Chemistry III."
