LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Under the careful guidance of Dave Speicher, the ABRF Newsletter has become an extremely effective instrument for facilitating communication between our more than 235 member laboratories. Whether you need an advance summary of an ABRF Committee Study, timely articles dealing with state-of-the-art biotechnology, a complete listing of ABRF publications, the date for an impending biotechnology meeting or a place to advertise the sale of a used instrument - you can find all this and more in the ABRF Newsletter. Within 6 weeks of being named the first Editor of the ABRF Newsletter, Dave Speicher had the first issue on its way to our members. Since the initial April, 1990 issue, Dave has published 11 high quality, consecutive newsletters without missing an issue, in fact, he has gone from three to four issues/year over this period of time. Nearly all the while, Dave has also served on the ABRF Executive Board as well as on the Protein Sequence Committee. Dave's contribution to the ABRF Newsletter can perhaps be best understood in terms of the number of people that will be required to replace him. Whereas Dave has previously served as the sole Editor and publisher, with complete responsibility for obtaining and editing all articles as well as for all word processing, formatting, printing, and distribution, these tasks will now be assumed jointly by an Editor, two Associate Editors (Greg Grant and Dave Speicher) and the ABRF Business Office at the FASEB Society. In addition, the Chair of the Education Committee, Beth Fowler, is also a member of the Editorial Board. Having served as Editor on only a single issue, it already is overwhelmingly apparent to me that ABRF was fortunate indeed to have had such a capable member as Dave Speicher volunteer to bring the idea of a newsletter from the "abstract" to the issue that you are now reading. Congratulations, Dave, on a job very well done indeed!
