NUCLEIC ACIDS COMMITTEE

The Nucleic Acids Committee has reviewed the nucleic acid technologies which may be relevant to ABRF members. These include DNA/RNA synthesis, DNA sequencing, PCR, library construction, sequence analysis, and genetic analysis. The committee decided to concentrate primarily on the core technologies: automated synthesis and sequencing. The involvement with other genetic technologies will be limited to monitoring the extent of their usage among ABRF members. The committee also attempted to recruit non-ABRF members involved in these technologies by advertising in Biotechniques and by circulating requests inside a variety of manufacturer's customer mailings. A comprehensive survey questionnaire dealing with these techniques was prepared to provide baseline data on the extent these techniques are used, the methods that are employed, and the quality of the data/products obtained. This survey has been submitted to the Wisconsin Survey Center and is expected to be released soon. The information provided by this survey will complement the data collected by the existing annual facility survey and will allow the design of an appropriate field test of DNA synthesis and sequencing facilities. This field test will be developed for 1993.
