AMINO ACID ANALYSIS COMMITTEE

The 1993 AAA Committee has expanded by one member, and we are pleased to announce that K. Umit Yuksel is already involved with the 1993 project. Umit brings a great deal of experience to the committee, and a lot of enthusiasm as well. Since turnover is anticipated within the committee at the end of 1993, we are still interested in recruiting additional members. If you would like to serve, please contact any member of the committee.

One of the objectives of the AAA Committee is to increase the quality of analyses at all sites. We eagerly invite your comments or questions concerning AAA methodology. To aid in the dissemination of information on techniques, the AAA Committee asked the sites which had the highest overall accuracy in the 1992 study (see Strydom et al., Cysteine and Tryptophan Amino Acid Analysis of ABRF 92-AAA in TECHNIQUES IN PROTEIN CHEMISTRY IV (R. H. Angeletti, ed.) Academic Press, 1993, for results of this study) if they would describe their methods. The solicitation was done in such a way as to maintain anonymity until the authors agreed to identify themselves and write a manuscript. Jeffrey D. Caplan and P. Balasubramanian (Lederle-Praxis Biologicals, in Rochester, NY) have prepared a manuscript, sharing their methods and "tricks of the trade" for AA analysis. Again, contact any member of the committee if you have any comments or questions concerning AAA methodology; use your ABRF Directory to obtain phone/FAX/email numbers.

After much discussion, and taking into account last year's challenging study from the Protein Sequence Committee (ABRF-92SEQ), the AAA committee will provide samples which include phosphorylated amino acids for the 1993 study. Again, it is our hope and intention that as many sites as possible will participate, and to this end we will include with the sample a brief discussion of possible methods of analysis for phospho-amino acids from which to choose. The study will be informative even if the phosphorylated amino acids are only qualitatively identified so plan to participate!
