The major topic on everyone's mind right now is our upcoming meeting in July. Like last year, the meeting will occupy a full day with a welcoming reception the evening before. Six workshops, in two concurrent sessions, will be presented as well as reports from our research committees.
This meeting will also offer some special features. At the top of the list is the first presentation of the Beckman-ABRF Award. On behalf of the Executive Board, I am extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Frederick Sanger will be the first recipient. Dr. Sanger's outstanding contributions in the areas of protein and DNA sequencing, two areas of great interest to ABRF members, exemplify the spirit and intent of this award. Dr. Sanger will attend the meeting in July to accept the award and will present a talk on that occasion. We hope that everyone will want to attend this special event. Please join us in welcoming and honoring Dr. Sanger for his special contributions.
Another unique feature of this year's meeting is that the Education Committee has arranged to videotape the workshops and make them available at a modest fee. They will thus be available to those who were not able to attend the meeting or who wanted to attend concurrent workshops and could not for obvious reasons. If this is successful, it may become an annual feature, but it depends on your interest and response.
In the last newsletter I mentioned the fact that we had reaffirmed our desire to hold an expanded meeting in the near future. That meeting is now planned for early spring of 1996 in San Francisco and will take place over 3-4 days. I am very pleased to announce that David Speicher and Steven Carr have accepted the task of organizing this meeting. Under their very able leadership, I am sure we can look forward to an outstanding program for this techniques-oriented meeting. You will not go wrong by making this meeting one of your top priorities. If you will be attending the Methods in Protein Structure Analysis meeting in September, don't forget that the ABRF will be presenting a workshop, organized by Reed Harris, on Identification of Post-translational Modifications. Enjoy the summer (winter for our members in the southern hemisphere) and come see us in San Diego and Snowbird.
