At the 1994 ABRF symposium held last July, the Survey Committee presented the preliminary results from the 1993/4 survey on salary and compensation. The survey asked members about their salary, benefits, position, specialty, and the services offered by the facility. Out of 252 facilities, 136 directors and 187 staff members responded. Seventy-one percent of respondents were from non-profit facilities. The preliminary analysis of the survey shows a marked increase in the number of facilities offering RNA synthesis, DNA sequencing, and mass spectroscopy since the 1992 survey.
The analysis indicated a broad range of salaries for all position types and degrees. For all degrees and positions, respondents at non-profit institutions were paid on the average less than those at for-profit institutions. The committee will continue to analyze the survey data and hopefully publish our findings in the near future. We are also discussing possible topics for our 1994/5 survey.
