The ABRF electronic mailing list has a new feature, the ABRF Ombudsman. If you have a controversial or difficult question, response, or problem that you would like to post anonymously, send your message to ombudsmn-@aecom.yu.edu (note the spelling!). Identifiers will be removed from your message before it is sent to the mailing list at large.
Messages posted by the ombudsman will appear in your electronic mail program with the ombudsman as the sender. Ed Nieves at Albert Einstein College of Medicine will act as ombudsman, replacing Ruth Angeletti, who initially served in this role. If the ombudsman seeks advice before posting the message on the mailing list server, the message will first be made anonymous.
As we have seen earlier this summer, the ombudsman service can take the personalities out of a hot topic. Other uses could be envisioned as well, for example, someone might seek advice from colleagues about a difficult local or laboratory problem. Recently, a question about an ABRF study was asked via the ombudsman. Two job openings were also posted through this address. The potential for productive use of this feature depends upon the wise and creative input of our members.
