The award was established two years ago as the Beckman-ABRF Award with funds generously provided by Beckman Instruments. The first two scientists to be recognized were Frederick Sanger in 1994 and Klaus Biemann in 1995. Starting with the 1996 award, Hewlett-Packard has agreed to accept the very important role as award sponsor.
