Message from the Executive Board

The ABRF '98 meeting held March 21-24 in San Diego was a great success, thanks to the efforts of organizers Al Smith and Mike Rohde, as well as the program committee and many ABRF members who labored behind the scenes to make things work. Over 900 scientists attended the meeting, a record for our independent meeting. In spite of its size, the meeting still retained the personal touch, with ABRF members and other attendees animatedly talking with each other and exchanging ideas. Our 1998 ABRF Award recipient, Dr. Bruce Merrifield, attended a number of the scientific sessions and participated in the discussions at the Peptide Synthesis Research Group session.

Ron Niece and Gary Siuzdak organized a joint ABRF/ASBMB Symposium: Present and Future of Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry at the ASBMB meeting held May 16-20 in Washington D.C. Joint symposia such as this serve as outreach to scientists who use the resources of ABRF laboratories, and have brought recognition to the ABRF. Ron has organized this program with the ASBMB for ten years and is now now organizing a "Meetings Committee" to assist with planning future ABRF symposia and meetings. Specifically, the committee will: i) solicit and evaluate proposals for participation in outside meetings and make recommendations to the Executive Board; ii) work with the membership and education committees to encourage poster and research group presentations of ABRF research; iii) coordinate distribution of ABRF literature at selected meetings; and; iv) evaluate the effectiveness of our participation, along with the organizers, and make recommendations about future participation. Please feel free to contact Ron about meeting ideas and proposals.

The Mass Spectrometry Research Group is presenting a poster at the 46th ASMS Conference in Florida, May 31-June 4. Later this year, the Nucleic Acids and DNA Sequence Research Groups will be presenting their work at a specially organized evening session at the Genome Sequencing and Analysis Conference, September 17-20 in Miami Beach. We thank the dedicated members of the research groups for planning these important activities, and the many ABRF members who participate in the research studies, providing valuable data for evaluation of current and emerging technologies.
