FASEB Career Resource Service
FASEB has for many years offered a Placement Service at national meetings of FASEB member societies in order to assist members and their students in finding positions. These services have been quite successful.
With the development of interactive World Wide Web technology, it has become apparent that much of this "matchmaking" can be done electronically rather than annually at a scientific meeting. To address these opportunities, the FASEB Board decided that it was worthwhile and appropriate to underwrite part of the costs for development of a year-round Web site.
Using this site, at http://ns2.faseb.org/careers/, employers can reach a larger number of candidates with more diverse backgrounds than at a meeting-based placement service, while job seekers are made aware of the enormous range of employment opportunities that are now available to them.
The value of this service is demonstrated by the level of attention it is receiving. At present the site receives an average of more than 30,000 visits each month.
Job listings are updated weekly and can be viewed by anyone with access to the World Wide Web. Employers are charged a small fee to list positions, but much of the cost for developing and maintaining the site is subsidized by FASEB.
The success of the site depends upon its use, and ABRF members are encouraged to list "positions available" and "positions sought" at the FASEB Career Resources Services web site. (Abridged from the FASEB Newsletter, February 1998, p. 10)
