The 16th American Peptide Symposium entitled "Peptides for the New Millennium" was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota from June 26 through July 1, 1999. Peptide chemists from all over the world attended this biennial international conference. The Peptide Synthesis Research Group (PSRG) of the ABRF sponsored a workshop on June 28 entitled "The Analysis of Synthetic Peptides." This 1.5-hour workshop was well attended. Lynda Bonewald, President of ABRF, introduced the ABRF, its mission, and its research groups. The workshop was then initiated and conducted by Ashok Khatri, the chair of the PSRG. All of the components of the workshop included practical approaches and helpful hints for peptide analysis, including suggestions for the optimal maintenance of instruments. Emphasis was placed on the use of several techniques in problem solving. Pros and cons of these analytical tools were also discussed. Lynda Bonewald led off with MALDI and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, followed by Ashok Khatri on HPLC analysis and Edman degradation; Henriette Remmer discussed capillary electrophoresis, and then George Ösapay commented on amino acid analysis. This workshop also included the work of Nicholas Ambulos, Lisa Bibbs, Steve Kates, Kati Medzihradszky, and Susan Weintraub, all of whom are members of the PSRG.
