You can also apple+shift+4 and hold it while you draw a square around what
you want. When you let go it takes a screen shot of your cropped image.
But it's basically the same thing. The old 672 software had the capability
to save pictures conveniently and I remember being mystified as well as
annoyed at why they chose to make it so hard!
