We had to move off campus and I had the same worries as you did. I
was wrong on all counts.
I negotiated a small place on campus where people could drop off
their samples and use the computers to download data. I have
"consulting hours" there every day for 1.5 hrs, (I'm here now). We
got a used pickup truck to pick up the samples and deliver materials.
I also negotiated enough space in our new labs to grow. The sqft
are cheaper so I got what I asked for. My people love the labs and
offices we are in, we actually have windows and decent parking spaces
and a place to put our lunch and actually eat it too.
Just before the move (2 months) we went completely paper-less with
online ordering and distribution of data over the internet. I
analyze everyone's dna data and put notes in a pdf file for them to
view. The customers so far love it.
We now deliver our peptides personally to each investigator so we
have even more interaction with them than before and my staff gets to
visit their labs and see what is going on there.
We are better than ever before and my staff gets to work without
silly interruptions. You know the ones I mean, just turned in their
sample and they want their data in an hour.
So Bob, make lemonade!!
