Absolutely. a dead 1600 isn't worth repairing. it is a discontinued
product and hp has no replacement product. as Tom Stelick said, we
tried the 2500 and were very unhappy. If you can get can get a 4500
and put it on the network, do it. It makes a great printer for all
the lab and office systems (as a little side rant, it bugs me that
printers don't get leverage on the networks the way they should - we
just got two mass specs from the same company and each one came with
a non-network laserprinter. Terrible waste of money and bench space!)
Laser consumables are a lot cheaper than inkjet (or so says
conventional wisdom). In a "wet" lab, the ink doesn't run either! I'm
a big fan of HP's JetDirect built in print servers. very easy to set
up.
If you don't need a printer for everybody to share, the inexpensive
epsons would work well for low volume electropherograms, but if
you're also printing out lots of article reprints, long reports or
similar things, you won't like the speed or the consumable cost of
the inkjets. For the same price as the printer, you can get an
external print server from epson that works with them.
