Dear Bill,
you can easily recrystallize both matrices using methanol (be sure to use
at least p.a. quality) and adding some charcoal (better to use grained form
instead of powder for subsequent removal) to the mixture. As far as I have
in mind, for a 25 g portion of CHCA you will need something between 500 and
1000 ml solvent so be sure to use a flask large enough (our first trials
started with 100 ml flask and we were a bit surprised about the solvent
amount we needed...). If you have a heated funnel for filtering the
solution after dissolution - use it! The CHCA will start to crystallize
very rapidly.
CHCA should have a pale yellowish colour after recrystallization, sinapinic
acid should be white.
Yours sincerely,
Marcus Macht
