The only "toxic" effects of papain that I am aware of, I learned as a result of a colleague's business proposition. If papain is applied topically (in cosmetics, or to break down toxins from animal stings, or to assist in wound debriding), there is the occaisional risk of an allergic reaction. I haven't responded earlier, because this problem has nothing to do with papain's use in foods and is not applicable. For everything you wanted to know about papain and more, search dogpile.com.
