Janice,
We get our foil from Costar have been using it successfully for the foil
piercing (just make sure the the seal is good with the plate, or else is
will pull up with the tips). The thickness is ~0.003 inches. These come
precut and you just peel off the backing and stick it on the plate. I don't
know how the 3M tape is, never tried.
