I have to admit, I am one of those who send my suggestions directly to
those who post the questions. I didn't used to do this until I got into
trouble with my boss (and his boss and his boss) for posting messages to the
whole board. I discovered that there are lurkers (even in my own company)
who bring these kinds of things to the higher-up's attention (not
necessarily a bad thing when you are complaining about bad service!). They
felt that I might say something which would compromise someone's research
and/or a company project and/or the company image. I felt that I was
discreet and that I was not disclosing any sensitive information, but they
put the fear of God into me about posting anything to a forum at large. I
have asked those to whom I have sent my messages not to post my name when
compiling answers if they feel it is necessary to post to the whole board.
I'm sorry about this, but I feel that I must continue to send my suggestions
directly to the inquirer. It's either that or not post anything at all. In
fact, I feel that I am taking a risk in replying to anyone about a technical
question. I think it's only a matter of time before all email will be
scanned by someone within the company for sensitive information. I then may
become a permanent lurker.
