Some private replies indicate that PE/ABI is not interested in
fixing the problem with OS9 (big surprise!)
I did confirm that version 3.3 (and presumably 3.4) on a powerbook
G3 running OS9.04 will crash with the same behavior. This indicates
the OS and not the hardware is the problem. Current imacs and G4s
will not boot from anything less than OS9. Because of Apple's changes
to the product line without corresponding name changes, this really
means only some, newer, imacs and G4s can't use 8.6. There may be
ways to hack the install to make 8.6 work, but I don't have the time
to jump through those hoops and I want the benefits of OS9. Those
who are interested may find a lot of information on doing this by
searching for "8.6" on this page:
