Hi all

Re : 2D gel software

I agree with most observations made by Katheryn Resing. With one
difference : I do not find PDQuest to be soo bad (maybe because I "grew up"
with it since it was one of the first programs around. Many others actually
copied a lot from it). It definitely needs some refurbishing because has
some "archaic" features but still has some advantages like very good
analysis tools.

other impressions :

Phoretix software : rumors are it is very good, though I have no direct
experience of it. It has a mode of automatic matching that theoretically
does not need manual landmarking. Does it really work ? no idea

Melanie: ahead of the others at least when it comes to linking information
(for example spots with protein seq. or database entry or MS data).
Overall good software.

Image MAster Elite 2D : new from Pharmacia. I had a demo recently. Looks
good, has most advanced features, is easy to use. Quite expensive but
definitely worth evaluating. They also have a nice software to build
automatically web pages from your analysed gels. Great but adds another
10'000 to the price tag.

In general it is important to stress what Katheryn said : software is just
an help tool. It still requires a lot of manual intervention and is in
general only worth having if one really runs many gels and after having
achieved good reproducibility.
