I enjoy my De Pro and get a lot of useful information out of it. I'm really
looking forward to working with the new version that has a high current
detector in the linear mode. This improves detection of HMW proteins in the
linear mode. I saw at least a five times larger peak with the same sample
using the new detector. The instrument now being produced (FINALLY) has
software that is using an updated OS (NT) and the new software looks like an
improvement over the old.
I think two of the most important questions to ask are: How many instruments
do you currently have installed in Country X and how many service
technicians do you have in Country X servicing them? I know that's a lot
for PerSeptive in the US on both counts. Other dealers have answered the
service tech question with less than a handful and in one instance a single
service person. Once you really start making full use of your MALDI you
won't be willing to wait three weeks for a repair.

We recently evaluated MALDI_TOFs from several companies (Micromass, Bruker,
PE, Amersham Pharmacia)for oligonucleotide and polymer analysis. We settled
on PE Voyager-DE PRO. Easy to use, good data, helpful technical people (at
least while they were trying to make the sale). Bruker was a very close
second in our opinion. The best thing you can do is to get them to bring you
to their facility and test YOUR compounds. Good luck!
Bruce.

Subject: Recommendations on MALDI instruments
Hi,
We are interested in purchasing a new MALDI-TOF instrument and would
appreciate any recommendations/input on the different models available.
We plan to use the instrument for analysis of proteins, peptides, peptide
digests, and oligosaccharides. Our primary considerations are instrument
reliability, ease of use of the software, service quality and applications
and technical support offered by the vendor.
Thanks
