The Protein Structure Analysis Group at Chiron Corporation, in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, has a position open for a BS/MS mass spectrometrist as a Senior Specialist. The position requires 10+ years of hands-on experience in protein mass spectrometry, which should include extensive familiarity with sample preparation and the analysis of proteins and peptides, from biological samples, at the sub-picomole level. The Senior Specialist will be responsible for operating a variety of instruments and interpreting mass spectra in a core facility which supports all groups within Chiron Corporation. The candidate will conduct experiments to identify and characterize biological molecules and communicate results in support of multiple projects. Samples for analysis will include proteins, peptides, phosphoproteins, glycoproteins, oligosaccharides, nucleotides and small molecule drug candidates. The candidate should have a proven ability to work independently to identify and characterize sub-picomole amounts of proteins using a variety of mass spectrometers (MALDI-TOF, triple-quadrupole with nanospray MS/MS, capillary/nano-LC-MS with Q-TOF). The candidate should have experience in the interpretation of peptide MS/MS spectra both manually and with the use of software algorithms. Experience with database search software to identify proteins in protein and EST databases is required. The ability to work on multiple projects in a team setting and meet critical timelines is essential. Chiron Corporation offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including stock options.
