High background often means that the reagents for the gels were not clean
enough. You can tell if this is the case when you are running 1 D gels,
because you should see clear background between the lanes or at the edges
of the gel. If not, then you should change reagents, make SDS solutions
fresh (it can grow things), always use gloves when preparing reagents or
pouring gels, and prepare and run gels in a clean environment (lab dust is
a major source of contamination). If you see a lot of silver preciptating
onto the surface of the gel (it gets a bit shiny and you can rub off the
stain), then you should change the method you clean your gel plates.
