MICROBORE DANGER

Recently a vendor of microbore HPLC equipment was installing a system with
capillary tubing inserted into a short piece of PEEK tubing (as a shroud).
During flow testing a pressure spike in the system caused the capillary
tubing to be launched out of the peek tubing and the 2 inch long piece of
capillary tubing embedded in the vendors hand. Clearly the ferrule had not
been tightened enough to hold the capillary tubing in place. The complete
length of tubing entered the vendors palm and he required a trip to the
emergency room to remove the capillary. Fortunately no long term injury
resulted.

I am sending this email as a precautionary tale to all users of microbore
HPLC. I have not heard of this before but illustrates the inherent dangers
of high pressure liquid chromatography.
