This is definitely true. At our University (Indiana) we must compete with
Eli Lilly for hiring technicians. Very difficult when Lilly can pay far
more than we can. There obviously is a need for more technicians and
quality training. In response to this, our Department of Biochemistry is
trying to develop a Biotechnology Training Program. This will either be a
certificate-based program or a full-fledged masters degree program. Several
other institutions have developed very successful Biotech masters degree
programs.

Hi
I think that you have (another) original and great idea. Our university
has
been warning us that demographics are changing and that it will be
increasingly
difficult to recruit skilled personnel. At the same time faculty are
demanding
access to better core facilities and "key platform technologies". I'm trying
to
promote the idea that our core facilities also play a major role in training
new personnel. I'd like to see staff rotate through different labs to gain
practical experience in a wide range of technologies. My idea is for
students
who have already completed a B.Sc. and could spend 12-24 months in some type
of
sponsored work-term.
The ABRF has set a good example of how a core service Director can be a
career professional. The same should apply to personnel at lower levels,
i.e.
career technical staff or career resource personnel. Any suggestions on
appropriate terms to describe our technical staff in this light?
