I wish to echo the sentiments of Cathy Stone and Ken Williams regarding the
Executive Board's decision to not promote the proposed Edman protein
sequencing study. This decision seems to me as well somewhat misguided
given the mission of the ABRF. Some of the computer algorithms developed
for the analysis of such data was developed here at the University of
Virginia and I am well acquainted with them. I believe it is important to
disseminate to the community the availability of such programs and to allow
the community to assess their effectiveness. The proposed study would do
that and I do not believe a similar study has previously been carried out.
Although we all seem to have a good understanding of the role of mass
spectrometry in protein identification and de novo sequence analysis I think
the community is less certain as what role Edman sequence analysis may play
in today's protein analysis repertoire. This study could be significant in
clarifying that role.
