I have no problem with the 247.For some reason, the acetyl group came off
the N-acetyl derivative.I do not know about the larger species.

Subject: MALDI-TOF analysis of sialic acid containing oligosaccharides
Dear ABRF members,
I am seeing this un-explainable phenomenon during MALDI-TOF analysis of
sialic acid containing oligosaccharides. If my sample contains one sialic
acid, then I get two masses; (1) parent mass, (2) parent mass minus 247. If
my sample contains 2 sialic then I get 3 masses; (1) parent mass, (2)
parent
mass minus 256, (3) parent mass minus 503 (256+247). If the sample
comprised
of 3 sialic acid, then I get 4 masses; (1) parent mass, (2) parent mass
minus 256, (3) parent mass minus 512 (256+256), (4) parent mass minus 759
(256+256+247). Anyone has any explanation as to why the sialic acid loss is
associated with 247 or 256 Dalton loss instead of 291Dalton???
Thanks,
Letha Chemmalil
