The University of Michigan has an open position in the Protein Structure
Core for a Group Leader of the Peptide Synthesis Group. The level is
Research Associate II. The peptide synthesis group occupies approx. 900
sq. ft. of modern laboratory space plus adjacent common space. The group
maintains a full complement of instrumentation, including four peptide
synthesizers, several preparative and analytical HPLCs, and other
support instrumentation. The group currently employs two full-time
experienced technicians and one part-time employee. The Protein
Structure Core is a centralized research resource established to provide
support to investigators in all areas of protein structure research,
including, but not limited to, mass spectrometry, protein sequencing,
peptide synthesis and purification, amino acid analysis, and
micro-separations (e.g. CE and capillary HPLC). The Protein Core has
laboratories occupying approximately 2,700-sq. ft. of space and
currently employs a staff of seven (including an Associate Director).
The Protein Core space is contiguous with other Core Facilities ñ DNA
Sequencing, Transgenic Animal, and Restriction Enzyme Store. This is a
University-wide Core facility serving bioscience investigators across
multiple Schools, Institutes, and Centers.

DUTIES: Responsible for all aspects of peptide synthesis including
consulting with and assisting investigators with strategies for
synthesis, performing syntheses, HPLC purification, quality assurance
procedures, supervision and oversight of other staff in synthesis and
purification, recordkeeping, billing and audit documentation.
DEPT MINIMUM QUALS: M.S. or Ph.D. Biochemistry, Chemistry or related
discipline. 2-3 years experience in research setting involving protein
chemistry, peptide synthesis and purification. Effective computer skills
including use of computerized databases. Effective written and verbal
communication skills.
DESIRED QUALS: Experience in Core laboratory setting including
providing scientific services to research investigators.
