The University of Utah DNA Sequencing Core Facility seeks a new director. The facility provides sequencing services to over 1,000 members of the universityís scientific community. Over 80,000 templates per year are sequenced using a combination of capillary and gel-based systems. Facility staff also help investigators with project design, contig assembly, and interpretation.
The position requires experience in an academic or industrial sequencing facility, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a detailed knowledge of sequencing chemistry and equipment. Candidates capable of bringing additional services to the facility, such as microarray interrogation and/or bioinformatics, will be highly favored. A Ph.D. degree is preferred but not required. The position provides a generous relocation and salary package commensurate with experience.
\The director must be familiar with the very latest technologies and must develop and deploy services that use these technologies to meet the demands of the user community. Currently, four positions report to the director; two senior research specialists, one laboratory specialist and one half-time laboratory technician. The facility is equipped with two PE-ABD 377 sequencers and one PE-ABD 3700 capillary sequencer.
The director is responsible for: 1) designing and maintaining standard operating protocols and methods to offer as services, 2) hiring and training of staff, 3) managing all aspects of the financial operations of the facility, 4) troubleshooting any serious problems within the facility that the staff cannot deal with, 5) working closely with my staff to train them in the newest technologies in order to provide the highest quality sequencing results for our users, 6) evaluating new sequencing chemistries and new instrumentation, 7) implementing emerging new technologies as services, 8) providing consultation services to the user community, 9) maintaining quality control and user satisfaction, and 10) preparing annual usage reports, justified budget proposals and equipment requests.
The facility is one of 8 facilities that report to Assistant Vice President of Research at the Health Science Center. A central office provides financial consulting, billing, accounting, human resources, informatics and computer support for these facilities. An oversight committee, made up of senior faculty, reviews operations and prioritizes budget requests from all of the core facilities.
