Norman,
Sypro Ruby is probably the most sensitive. It is sold by either Molecular
Probes (see http://www.probes.com/lit/feature/syprodyes/section1.html) or
BioRad under licence but you will neeed a flourescent scanner . There is
some disagreement in the literature but I believe silver is about the same,
especially if you use a fixing protocol including formaldehyde or
glutaraldehyde. Of course silver is technically a bit more complex but you
can use a visible scanner. If you just want to visualize, then there are
quite a few kits on the market for this type of stain or it's pretty simple
to make up your own reagents. There is a good protocol at
http://www.fhcrc.org/labs/hahn/methods/biochem_meth/silver_stain.html
Caveat: if you want to do any downstream processing (sequencing or mass
spec) don't use this type of silver stain. Use either Sypro Ruby or read
about silver staining for mass spec in the excellent ASMS poster of Ejvind
Moertz et. al. downloadable at http://www.protana.com/publics/default.asp
Good luck...Ken
