Hi Bob
I can tell you that the Fragment Analysis Research Group will
present a poster and discuss their results of their current study
concerning the use of tailed vs untailed dinucleotide and trinucleotide
repeat markers (I hope you participated) in their Research Group
presentation. In addition, at the Research Group presentation, there
will be a presentation/discussion on fluorescent quantitative PCR
techniques for SNP analysis or Allelic discrimination.
Also there will be a tutorial on Fragment Analysis that deals with
the everyday technicial problems involved with running a fragment analysis
facility. Caprice Rosato from Oregon State Univ and Lynn Petukhova from
Rockefeller U. will make presentations in this session chaired by Doug
Binzler of the U. of Cinciniati. I think that this is exactly the type of
information that you might find very helpful.
In addition there are a number of scientific sessions that you
might find interesting. I just checked the latest program information at
http://www.faseb.org/meetings/abrf2001/call/prelprog.pdf and it looked
very interesting from a "DNA" point of view. There are sessions
concerning grant funding and how to make effective presentations that might
be helpful to you.
Another useful aspect of the ABRF meeting is a chance to see the
latest in technology and establish relationships with the vendors. Free
samples, more efficient products and ways to do things, special offers -
to name a few things. Vendors can also be a great source of technical
information.
This would be a very good opportunity to meet and establish contact
with other core facility personnel that are in similar situations and meet
face to face with people in the ABRF that may have helped you already. One
of the great things about the ABRF is that it does represent a diversity
of technologies and this can be very helpful. Management and
organizational problems transcend the technology and I'm sure you will find
some useful information by talking to others. And don't forget - you may
be able to help someone else!
I believe that going to this meeting is one of the most important things
you can do for yourself and will be well worth the effort. I hope to see
you there. :-)
