ABRF BBS participants:
Mark Crankshaw has pointed out a very important aspect of our shared
bulletin board and I agree with him that the fundamental utility of this
venue depends upon SHARING information. Whenever possible responses
should be public, directed to the entire list so we can all benefit
from the discussion.
The ABRF Executive Board recently discussed the BBS and ways that we
might be able to improve and perhaps automate its functions. There are
currently some operational issues that we need to address regarding
management of the mailing list so I am looking for input from our
computer-savy members. For example, currently subscription requests are
handled manually. This process COULD be automated but I want to ask
whether it SHOULD be to avoid the annoying "Please unsubscribe/subscribe
me" messages? Can message topics be archived more easily, automatically
and in a more helpful way? I know that there are software packages that
specialize in management of discussion groups such as that provided by
WebCrossing (www.webcrossing.com) but I have very little experience with
any one of them. Do any of you have experience with such software that
runs on a scale as large as the ABRF site? If so, I would like to hear
about your experiences and your recommendations regarding its use. Is
there a sense that we should consider changing the way this list server
or is it fine as it is?
Thanks for your input and I look forward to seeing many of you in San
Diego.
Mark
