While we routinely use sypro ruby, we have recently done an in house test
which compared the identification efficiency of a number of stains
including Silver stain plus. MS results from both(Ag+ and ruby) were
similar in terms of success of identification by MALDI. ie similar number
of proteins identified, similar sequence coverage. This was done without
any sample clean up, using automated sample handling. Hence no special
protocols were used. We are extending this study and hope to submit it for
publication in the near future.

In general the silver stain was suprisingly good in terms of staining and
background.
