Katarzyna,

We have installed the demo version of genemapper successfully. The computer
that you install genemapper on can not have another oracle DB present on the
computer. The 3100 collection software has an oracle DB which means you can
not install genemapper on the same computer that is running the 3100. The
recommended requirements for this additional computer are:

733MHz pentium III
256MB RAM
6GB hard drive
TCP/IP installed and configured
minimum of 100MB of free disk space on the system drive (C:/drive)

For installation you also need to be able to log on to the NT as the system
administrator

The software has some nice features (autobinning of alleles, some QC
functions) and overall we were pleased and decided to buy the software. It
does, however, have a high learning curve and it takes a while to get
familiar with different windows.

good luck!

Michael,

Our lab has used both ABI377 and ABI 3100 for fluorescent genotyping, and as
far as I know, ABI3700 is identical when it comes to analysis software.
Yes, use of GeneScan is necessary for sizing up fragments. The software
that sorts out fragments is Genotyper. My crew and I spend a lot of time
manually editing peaks that Genotyper identified incorrectly and your number
of 20% incorrect calls seems accurate. The main reason for this is
inconsistent treatment of grouped and ungrouped categories in Genotyper. If
that ever gets fixed, allele calling will be nearly flawless. Please email
me if you would like more information. I will be happy to to share our
experiences.

By the way, PE is coming up with GeneMapper, which is supposed to replace
both GeneScan ad Genotyper. I have a CD of the demo version on my desk, but
for reasons known only to Oracle experts I can't install it - and I tried
four times. Our IT people don't seem to know what is wrong and suspect that
CD may be faulty. Technical support at PE suggested:
1) not enough RAM,
2) wrong service pack for Windows NT (we use 6, they would like to see 5), a
statement that they later retracted, and
3)there is a piece of Oracle somewhere in my computer (they won't say where
to look for it), so I should just get new computer.

Has anybody on this forum installed GeneMapper demo successfully?
