Yoki,
We have a Biflex III which we use for 2D gel analysis and generally it
gives very good spectra. The main problem I have with it is its unrelenting
unreliability. We have significant periods of time where the machine is
down and awaiting/being repaired, e.g at least a month this year already,
with the probe exchange mechanism being a notorious source of problems (and
that's not just my experience). Whether we've just been unlucky or whether
we've brought some these problems on ourselves (the machine has been moved
around a bit and we've had power supply problems due to building work) I
can't say but it is a shame as the spectra it produces in my opinion are
excellent. The software that comes with it is also a bit ropey and is very
prone to crashing and freezing up (which is quite an achievement for UNIX
based software!); I find it very unwieldy as well. Bruker are apparently
bringing out new PC based versions but I don't know anything about those.
We also have the Genomic Solutions robotics system which we haven't really
put through it's paces yet so I can't say too much about that except that
we had problems with the gel staining/washing unit where the meshes used to
separate the gels were actually staining the gels themselves. That hasn't
been resolved by GS as far as I know. Otherwise there have been some
general 'teething' difficulties with calibration, cutting accuracy etc but
it is an easy enough system to use and get around and the problems we've
had have seemed quite straight forward to resolve.
Hope this helps.
