Greetings,
Some time ago I ran a brief poll to see what types of gel imaging people are using for 2D gel (proteomics) work. I was especially interested in people who were using fluorescent stains but welcomed responses from those using silver and coomassie stains. Not much to report but if you want any more info, feel free to contact me.
For silver and coomassie:
Pharamcia and Biorad offer private labeled scanners which have been somewhat modified to deal with laboratory samples (ie. they are sealed to deal with wet gels and such). Some people reported that they are perfectly happy to use an off the shelf scanner (Epson or UMAX) that you can buy from your local office supply shop.
For fluorescent stains:
There are a number of options here. Biorad, Pharmacia, and Fuji offer laser based scanning systems as well as CCD camera based systems from Biorad, Fuji, and Perkin Elmer.
We are using the Perkin Elmer scanner (CCD) and one other person reported that the Pharmacia (Typhoon) was very good in their opinion another indicated that the Fuji laser based system was the best for Sypro ruby stained gels.
