Re: Discontinued gels

We routinely use the Novex 6%TBE gels for RNase protection assays with good results. We dry them on a regular gel dryer. This may be an alternative, although maybe not quite as fast.

I would be interested in your microwave gel drying protocol (i.e. any extra apparatus required, what types of gels can be dried this way, reference, etc.)

Thanks,
Todd

Hello everyone

While we are on the subject of discontinued gels, perhaps there is some
help for me also.
We are currently using An Invitrogen,(actually Novex) gel called the
Quickpoint Rapid Nucleic Acid Separation System.

We use them for RNase protection assays and have been quite pleased with
them as far as ease of use, separation, etc. A gel can be run in 20
minutes and dried in a microwave, making them very quick and efficient.

Recently we tried to order more, and we have been informed that they will
no longer make them. This puts a serious crimp in our plans.
Invitrogen was kind enough to send us their remaining stock- so we are not
desperate yet, but we need to resolve the problem in the next few months.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would welcome them. If a gel expert has
any idea of the compostion of these gels , we would be glad to make our
own. They are a neutral pH, denaturing polyacrylamide gel. We are very
spoiled and would not like to go back to using larger gels. Or if anyone
has any of these gels that they would part with- we'll take them.
I suppose we can experiment on our own- but time is at a premium and so I
will try this way first. :-).

Thanks

Scottie
