We have a 3100 and, when it's working (which lately has been most of the
time), we like it very much. If you have enough samples, it's definitely
cheaper than the 377 because you save so much in labor cost. One thing to
keep in mind is that it has to be fed regularly. If it sits unused for more
than a short weekend, things seem to degrade. Monomere seep/leaks around
fittings and gums things up, capillaries seem to loose resolution. You can
shut the lab down for week and the 377 is perfectly happy.

Hi everyone,

We are currently trying to get funding for a new DNA sequencer and I wanted
to get some opinions on the latest machines out there. We are currently
getting information on the ABI 3100, the Molecular Dynamics Megabase and
MJGenesys Base station.

We currently have an ABI 377 which I feel is relatively cheap to run. Do
other people feel that the capillary sequencers are more expensive to run
than the old gel version?

Any opinions would be appreciated

regards

Amanda
