David,
I don't know what the typical charges are, but I'll tell you what I charge
for MALDI-TOF analysis. For a straight mass analysis, the first sample in a
lot is $50 and $25 for each additional sample run. This is to encourage
multiple samples since we ordinarily run samples as they come through the
door. Although lately I have been allowing samples to collect in the A.M.
to run in the P.M. So for 10 samples, the average cost is $27.50 each. Each
sample is run by itself and then a second time with one or two internal
standards and usually monoisotopic values are reported routinely to mass
3k. If a sample fails to give data, I still charge, but allow the person to
bring a second prep. for a retry @ N/C. I give out hardcopy graphs as well
as a data report with each sample. I set a special rate of 50% for all MS
work on HPLC fractions for internal sequence study by tryptic or endolys-C
digestion. These rates apply to proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides, and
small organics. I haven't set charges for collisional or PSD fragmentation
studies other than carboxypeptidase C-terminal sequencing of peptides for
which I charge $125 and only do both for the campus. For outside work, I
have to double these charges to recover salaries and overhead which are
otherwise subsidized by a grant. I do not depreciate equipment as they are
obtained by grant. I hope this helps.
