I agree that the HP1090 is a very good investment; in fact, for about
$30,000-$35,000 you can buy a refurbished HP1090 from one of several
companies that do this kind of business (I don't know if HP sells
refurbished instruments, other than demos, directly). Many of these
companies refurbish instruments using genuine HP parts and have HP come
in and test the rebuilt instrument. You can get a good deal this way,
provided you ask around for the experiences of others with a particular
vendor of rebuilt instruments. This arrangement would leave plenty of
money to buy spare parts and a service contract from HP (which will
service instruments rebuilt by others) or a third party. Having said
all this, however, I would like to point out that the Michrom HPLC is a
very nice instrument also -- it really depends what one wants to do. I
wonder, since the original question concerned buying a mass spec,
whether $50,000 will buy an electrospray single quad (rebuilt). anyone
have any information on this?

P.S. I also do not have any financial interest or connection to any of
the above companies, other than as a (satisfied) user.
