David,
Years ago when I was working on replacing lipid bilayers in model membrane
systems we would swamp and resolubilize the system in cholate and the
desired lipid mixtures--we used radiolabeled cholate and radiolabeled
phospholipids to monitor how well the original lipids were replaced--and
to monitor levels of cholate that remained. The counts were then
normalized to protein and phospholipid concentrations. Doping your SDS
solutions with radiolabeled SDS would be one approach to following the
amount of residual SDS in your protein preps.
