It could be sunny or it could be pouring. Hard to say at this point.
It all depends on what the jetstream is doing and if the storms are
going to be passing to the north of us or hitting us square on.
February and March are the worst El Nino months; in the last week, we've
had 1 minor and 4 major systems come through. Total rainfall for the
month of February so far: 6.3 inches. Normal total rainfall for San
Diego for the year: 12-15 inches. Total rainfall so far this year:
12.4 inches. So you see, everything is very, very wet for us and our
flood control infrastructure can't handle it. When we do get an El
Nino storm here, it can be as bad as 2 inches in 2 hours with winds up
to 25-35 mph, flooded streets, flash floods in the mountains and
deserts, the surf pounding structures on the coast to bits, etc, etc.
And we're not getting hit as hard as northern California. The Town &
Country Convention Center is in the flood plain of the San Diego River.
Flood control is usually pretty good there, but this is more rain than
what we usually get. The Convention Center is probably OK, but some
streets leading to it will be flooded and impassible during a bad El
Nino spell. You'll then have to take some detours to get there.
Fashion Valley, a big shopping mall just a few blocks away from the
Convention Center has been designed to let the river pour through the
bottom tiers of the parking structure when it floods. You should see
it, it's really cool. I'd bring wet weather gear for sure and hope for
sun.
