Dear ABRF meeting goers:

Convincing individual investigators and administrators that resource
laboratory personnel are professionals and deserve commensurate recognition
of their contributions is a problem faced by many ABRF members. A
discussion session to be held as part of the 1998 ABRF meeting will provide
an opportunity to share ideas on ways to address such issues. This session
will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 pm Sunday March 22 in the California
Ballroom. The session will be led by Bruce Hudson, a leadership training
consultant, with interests in helping individuals and groups maximize their
professional interactions.

The objectives of this discussion are to:

1. Encourage core facility personnel to define for themselves what it means
to be a professional

2. Share ideas on actions that individuals can take to influence how they
are perceived by outside scientists and administrators.

3. Share ideas on how individuals can build relationships with clients in
which the facility staff can contribute to scientific problem-solving

4. Share ideas on how ABRF as an organization can support these activities
and how ABRF members can support each other.

In preparation for this discussion, we would like potential participants to
consider the following questions:

(1) How does my user/institution presently view me and my resource
laboratory; (2) how do I want my user/institution to view me and my resource
laboratory.

We hope to see many of you there.
