I was given two samples for mass spec analysis and I need some help from the
mass spec experts. The first sample is a polyvinyl alcohol (MW 30-70 kDa), the
second is the polyvinyl alcohol with -CN substituted for a potion of the -H in
the polymer. The purpose is to get an estimate of the efficiency of the
reaction, so I need data from both samples. Our instrument is a MALDI-TOF, and
99% of my experience is with synthetic peptides. Will these molecules ionize?
What matrix should I use? We've got the standard peptide matrices, so if this
requires a new one, where can I purchase it? Are there any helpful techniques
for sample preparation? My previous experience with a polymer was unsuccessful.
I'm not sure if that was due to my ignorance regarding matrices and/or sample
preparation, or if it was due to an inherant difficulty with the analysis of
polymers by MALDI.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
