We recently evaluated demo units of the HP1100 and Waters Alliance HPLC's. The systems appear to be equivalent with regard to the performance of separations. The temperature controlled autosampler for the Waters unit did a very good job of refrigerating our samples as we saw no degradation over time. I agree with James that the HP1100 autosampler seems to have some definite shortcomings. I believe that the design is flawed. HP insists that their system will maintain 4 degrees Celsius but our data indicates that our samples did suffer some degradation over time. Has anyone else out there observed the same phenomenon? James, you eluded to a potential fix from HP. Do you (or anyone else out there) know what HP plans to do?

I would also add that Waters seemed to have a more well thought out database for data storage. This is coming from a long-time HP user.
I would be interested in the thoughts of others on the above matters as it would be useful in our decision for a near-term purchase.

Thanks,

Chuck Felice

Li Hong,

I have been using H/P's series 1100, with great success. One weak
component appears to be the temp. controlled auto-sampler, but H/P has
been diligent in pursuing the problem. I have been using the
semi-prep/analytical mode, but the system is supposedly capable of
microbore as well. The learning curve for the software is steep in that
there are many parameters to consider, but rather intuitive after you
become accustom to the idiosyncrasies.
