I cannot resist commenting on the recent discussion about the Procise and was
pleased to see someone mention that another vendor makes Edman sequencers.
When we went through the painful process of buying a new 4 cartridge sequencer
a few years ago high throughput was the primary issue not sensitivity.
Although we were generally pleased with our ABI 473 we bought the HP machine
rather than a Procise even though it meant learning new software and leaving
some very nice ABI support people. Why did we make this traumatic decision?
Number one on the list in my opinion is that one cannot use the word "robust"
in the same context as ABI's concept of chromatography. Number two, HP was
willing to dicker and we saved a bunch of money.
We have recently upgraded to the 1100 HPLC and although we haven't done a
comparison I take HP's word for it that the machine now has comparative or
better sensitivity to the equivalent ABI machine. Another thing to take into
consideration is that by giving HP a "few" bucks more you can also do
C-terminal sequencing with the same instrument.

Weather inconsequential: It is the middle of May and it is still raining out
here. I remember only a few years back when the California "panic of the day"
was lack of moisture.
